Extraordinary Women

Tom Stoddart

The Exhibition

Extraordinary Women is a collection of images that salutes the strong will of women through times of war, poverty and hardship. Ordinary women are capable of extraordinary things. When a crisis engulfs a community it’s the women who turn to face the challenges head-on. Their love of family and never surrender attitude drives them on to survive the miserable cruelty of conflicts, political persecution, natural disasters and health emergencies.
The photographs come from events documented by Tom Stoddart in the Balkans, Greece, Sudan, Mozambique, India, Bangladesh, China, South Africa and more.

The Photographer

Tom Stoddart began his photographic career on a local newspaper in his native North-East of England. In 1978 he moved to London and began working freelance for publications such as the Sunday Times and Time Magazine.

During a long and varied career, he has witnessed such international events as the war in Lebanon, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the election of President Nelson Mandela, the bloody siege of Sarajevo, the wars against Saddam Hussein in Iraq.
