The Donbas or the East of Ukraine is a land where ordinary people often feel abandoned, and the world has shifted its gaze away from this conflict at the edge of Europe. It seems almost forgotten. Yes, we knew the war never really ended, but somehow it devolved into a static back-and-forth of artillery fire and small unit incursions, mostly fought from trenches and from within bombed-out villages. So, the conflict hasn’t come to an end: it is only dormant, ready to erupt again.
Dmitri Beliakov is a freelance photojournalist, videographer, researcher and producer from Russia, Moscow with over 25 years of experience in the field.
Beliakov’s work was mainly in Russia and the former Soviet Union with a specific focus on armed conflicts, terrorism and counter-terrorism, and civil society crackdown. Through the course of his career, Dmitri was also chasing stories and producing multi-media projects, doing extensive research on the subjects in Russia and internationally.
